'Jess'
Full Name: Jessica Esme Coren
Nickname: Jess
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Age: 27

Face Claim: Louise Brealey
OC or Canon: Original Character
APPEARANCE
Height: 5’3
Weight: 145lbs
Eyes: Brown in colour, very expressive.
Hair: Long, Brown, Straight.
Overall Appearance:
Jessica has long, straight brown hair that she keeps neatly trimmed, preferring to style it herself into different lengths and hair-do’s than make any permanent changes. She doesn’t feel the need to keep up with the current trends or in things to do, she very much has her own style as she’s comfortable with it. This often shows through in the more quirky of her clothes or over-done make up, making her appear un co-ordinated or simply unaware of what she looks like, when in reality she is simply happy with the way she feels. Most of the time she can be found in her work clothes anyway, wearing black trousers, a formal often patterned shirt with her white lab coat over the top.
She has a round shaped face that is naturally pale in colour, betraying her greatly when a blush rises to her cheeks as it colours them rather quickly and obviously. She has no poker face, her emotions being very easily read by anyone who should happen upon her, her eyes being the biggest give away. She has a confident, if slightly short, stride to her walk as she goes about the job she loves, even if sometimes she can be slightly clumsy if she is in a rush or has been made nervous. She isn’t particularly tall, but her legs give her most of the height she does have, making her graceful in her movements.
PERSONALITY
Jessica is a smart, charming, intuitive young woman if just a little bit shy and socially awkward. She does enjoy being around people, and makes friends quite easily with her friendly, caring nature and softly spoken ways, but her trusting nature has gotten her hurt and betrayed so many times now that she tends to shy away from making too deep a connection with people anymore. She keeps people at a wary distance and often is happy to sit on the side-lines and watch someone else be the centre of attention. That isn’t to say of course, that while she’s there she’s not invested in what is happening around her. She has learned to read people quite well, to see beneath the social mask they exude and quietly catch them in their weakest moments, when that mask slips just a little and she can see the real person underneath. Not that she would ever expose that of course, unless it was necessary or she was concerned about the things she saw, but her caution with people has adapted that skill to such a level that she could probably tell more truth about a person from simply watching than in any words that could be spoken.
Of course, if you can truly count yourself as one of her friends, you will never find a more dependable, trustworthy or caring soul than her. For one thing, her job demands that she be so. When you are entrusted with the care of a family’s departed loved one – whichever species it may be – that trust has to be built quickly that you will look after them for their final journey while also providing the family with the answers they seek. Her natural affinity to be this way makes her one of the most sought after and skilled registrars on her planet. For another, she knows far too well what it is to be in so much pain that you just need someone to not only support you, but also to set you straight again. She tries to be that for everyone she meets, though very few will actually return the favour or really even notice she is there. She is easily overlooked in her isolated job in the morgue of the local health care facility, and often forgotten about or considered unimportant.
For all her kindness however, Jessica does have a stronger side. She is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, or call someone out on something she feels strongly is wrong. When she gets angry, she can yell and argue with the best of them but it is very rare she ever has to resort to this.
BACKGROUND
Planet Origin: Alderran
Starting Planet: Alderran
Era Origin: Old Republic
History:
From the very early years of Jessica’s life, it would have been clear to the girl that things were never going to be easy, or like everyone else’s, had she been able to remember such a time. At the time of her birth, her mother was already ill and afterwards her health continued to decline and though it wasn’t at a rapid pace, it was a crippling and painful decline. Much of her father’s time was taken up with looking after her mother, while her care was left largely to the Nanny the family employed. While she did get to spend moments with her parents, telling them about school, movies she’d seen, music she liked, she didn’t get to spend days with her mother doing her homework, playing games and having beauty days where they played with make-up and hairstyles. Her parents didn’t come to see her teachers to hear how well she was doing in her studies, or attend her music and dance recitals. They didn’t have days out together as her mother was mostly bed bound, and trips to other planets just didn’t happen. The other children noticed pretty quickly, and while one or two sympathised, it didn’t stop the cruel and hurtful remarks being thrown her way about being un-loveable and it was often you would only be able to find her alone in the corner of a library. She immersed herself not just in the world of fiction that she enjoyed, but in the academic work she could find particularly around medicine. It made sense in her young mind, that perhaps if she could learn enough quickly then she could find a way to make her mother better.
Of course, a child’s ideas and optimism can only stretch so far in the reality of the adult world…and at the age of 10, Jessica lost her mother to the disease. While it upset her greatly, as losing any parent would do to a child, Jessica couldn’t help but feel a little relief that there would finally be no more pain and that now her father could actually be hers again. For a short time, it seemed to be so as he took more interest in his daughter and worked hard to try and build the relationship they were supposed to have. The more he saw her though, the more he was reminded of her mother and after a few months of trying he started to pull back again, alone and grief-stricken he turned to drink to combat his demons. At first it wasn’t such a big deal, just something to take the edge off his pain and still be able to see his daughter, listen to what she had to say. But as the years pushed on the amount he drank started to increase until it wasn’t uncommon that Jessica was eventually caring for her father when she returned home. She’d gone from barely having her parents, to being one to an overgrown child. She looked after the family home, tidied away evidence of his drinking as if it concealed the fact he was doing it from her and even started to take her father’s money to buy food for the house. She often went to bed late after making sure he was in bed, struggling her way through school and keeping the routine up once she came home again.
Her father wasn’t an angry drunk, or abusive, he deeply cared for his daughter but had such an inability to move past his pain alone that he could neither function with or without the drink. One moment that really changed everything between them though and would affect her for the rest of her life, was when she tried to put a stop to the drinking at age 13. Before she headed to get food, she found her father’s stash of booze and made the decision to throw it all away. Perhaps then he would talk to her properly and she could explain, could ask him to stop and be her father again. Only it didn’t turn out that way. When she returned to the house, her father was already awake and storming through the house trying to find his missing drink. On her explaining to him what she had done, he turned even angrier, yelling at her for perhaps the first time in her life and knocking the food bags from her arms. Terrified and upset, she ran from him to her room and locked herself in, too afraid to return downstairs and clear everything away or to even attempt to get herself any food.
Over time, this developed into a psychological link between high stress and food, whereby she did the opposite of what most people did when they were upset. She turned her back on food, sometimes dropping so drastically in weight that her teachers started to notice and ask her about it. She would always deny there was anything wrong, blaming it on an upcoming growth spurt or just going through a spell of illness. Of course, those excuses would only wash so long, and eventually enquiries started to be made as to her home life and how suitable her father was to take care of her. tried everything to make her father aware, tell him that they would take her away but she could never get through to him. The authorities would never have the chance to make their investigations however….as one day Jessica returned home to find her father alone on the kitchen floor, having choked on his own vomit.
As alone as she had always felt, nothing compared to the pain and loneliness of being made an orphan, especially when her disorder grew so bad that she was hospitalised with no one to hold her hand or make her feel like her world would one day be whole again. It would take a couple of years of therapy, and work at the hands of some of the best doctors that would eventually manage to get her back in a good place. It was thanks to them that she not only managed to move on with her life, but also helped to steer her towards her chosen profession. She was always interested in the medical field, but struggled as she tried to progress to being a healer as she never could deliver bad news and didn’t really ever want to stop trying to cure a patient as she knew all too well the pain and devastation such a diagnosis could bring. She eventually gravitated more towards the other end of the scale, when nothing more could be done except try and offer comfort and answers. Where she could be alone to do her work, and stay out the way for the most part. She went to work in the morgue as a specialist registrar.
Jessica has never left Alderran, however she moved far away from the childhood home she had once lived in, and now works in the most respected medical facility on the planet. She cares for every departed soul and brings as much peace and comfort to the families she deals with as she works to either find out why they passed on or in the reassurance that she will be there to care for them in their last moments on the planet. She lives alone in a small, but lovely apartment, and though she prefers to be alone, she still hopes one day there will be someone who can break through her web of emotional and psychological traumas to see the person she is underneath. She is a strong and confident woman for all the suffering she has been through, but it has turned her somewhat cold to the idea of love and family.
ABILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
Strengths/Skills:
-Medical Expertise: While she is a specialist registrar, she has been through a great deal of medical training to get to that point, meaning she could heal people if it was drastically needed.
-Observant: Preferring to stay on the side-lines and watch rather than participate has made quite adapt at being able to read people and their feelings. She always knows what to say to somebody, knows what they are trying to say even when they can’t find the words. She also finds it quite easy to spot when she is being lied to.
-Artist: One of her hidden skills is her ability to draw. Reading fiction has always created vivid images in her mind that she tried to capture on paper, and all her life her drawing had given her the source of comfort and escape her real life could never offer her. Hearing stories of other worlds, and the descriptions they give, let her mind wander as to what the rest of the galaxy has to offer, and she often tries to capture this on paper. Perhaps one day, she will have the courage to go and see them for herself.
Weaknesses:
- Eating Disorder: When stressed or upset, Jessica tends to shut down both completely away from people and as much of life as she can. Her body feels like it literally rebels food, and it is a struggle for her to break through that on her own. It has been a long time since she’s felt so low that it’s taken her back over, but the threat is always there.
- Socially Awkward: She doesn’t like to be in the middle of big parties or gatherings, preferring to only have a couple of friends and spending quiet nights with them. She doesn’t give her trust easily, and it takes a while to get to know the real her.
Weapons/Equipment: She carries a blaster but is not exceptionally skilled at it. She knows the basics to be able to defend herself if needs be.
