The meeting with the Jedi Council had gone from serious to frustrating.
While it wasn't like Daniel Dumah to care for other people's opinions or think about them, there was something bothering him since a week. His padawan had been assigned to work for a non-Jedi healer without his opinion was asked. She was still around him for a small portion of the day, but the majority of her time was spent among another person. The whole idea was clashing with their master/padawan relationship.
Their separation didn't bother him for the first few days. But later on, Daniel started to question things. When he directed these questions to an elder master, he wasn't satisfied with the answer. So the suspicion's seed was planted. And it started to grow every new second. It was why he asked for a personal meeting with the Jedi Council. His request was accepted and he was expected to join them in their next meeting.
If Daniel was doubtful and not satisfied before, now he was frustrated. To his logical questions, all he received was dodgy answers and senseless reasons. He didn't raise his tone. The whole conversation remained peacefully for an outsider's eyes. He was too calculated and in control. Always respectful. But he swallowed down the suspicion, which started to burn his stomach in a great flame.
There was something wrong and he had to find it out. Yet he already knew he wasn't going to like what he would face. Giving a respective nod at the council and turning back to leave the hall, Daniel followed down the corridor. Though, after reaching outside to get some fresh air, he stood there in the opening without doing anything. His arms were hanging at his each side, floppy sleeves of his brown robes were waving around his knees. So many questions were in his head and the theories he could come up with were distasteful.

Recently, Emmi had been assigned to a civilian doctor, Dr. Gunner Halos, to practice medicine and learn from him. She had been told time and time again that he was brilliant and would learn a great deal from him, however Emmi found him rather off putting. He was rude, loud, and forward when it came to commenting on women's bodies. The whole thing made Emmi uncomfortable but she was too polite to say anything about it. She tried to look at the experience as positively as possible. If the man was as brilliant as they all said then there were many things she could learn from him and so many people she could help. Perhaps she had been placed with him to offer bedside manner that the doctor lacked. But still something about the council's explanations felt off.
Emmi had just gotten off a shift with the doctor and was left exhausted because of it. She was tired in a way she had only been a few times in her life. All the young healer wanted to do was fall right into bed and sleep until morning. However, upon entering the temple she could sense that her master was in distress. As tired as she was Emmi knew that she needed to find him and make sure he was alright. Her concern for him overpowered her desire to rest. She picked up her speed and made her way towards her master.
It did not take long for Emmi to find him and as she got closer his feelings only intensified. Even the man's usually controlled body language registered defeat. It had been a week since they two had seen one another so Emmi knew of nothing that would have put him in this state. Cautiously, she got closer and reached out a hand for his shoulder. "Master," Emmi called his attention to her. "It has been far too long! What is wrong? You seem unhappy."

As Daniel stood there with a million thoughts and questions in his head, he didn't even feel his padawan approaching. He was too distracted to be in contact with the Force. But this new suspicion was burdening heavily on his shoulders, making him slouch a bit. He looked tired, but mostly concerned. And that was a lot of emotion coming from Daniel at this point. He usually wore a thoughtful expression before. And this was not like him.
When a hand was placed on his shoulder, he was brought back to reality; being pulled away from his thoughts. Turning his face at the owner of the hand, Daniel was a little surprised about seeing Emmi here. She seemed concerned oh the bad mood he was in and questioned him about it. "Emmi..." He called her name, but for a proper answer; he had to wait for a moment to collect his thoughts.
When he was ready to speak again, Daniel gave a little sigh and fixed his blue eyes on the redhead; looking down at her. "I think..." He wanted to thread carefully, but in the end he couldn't help being honest with what he said. Lying was never one of his strengths. "The council thinks there is something wrong with me." Perhaps, he started telling this in the wrong angle. But at this point, that was what he was focused about.

There was definitely something wrong. Master Dumah didn't seem to recognize that she was there, not at first. This was very concerning to Emmi. Her master wasn't very observant when it came to social situations. However, he was observant, at least when it came to sensing his student. Not this time. Something was making her master act this way. It was only after she had said his name that he acknoweldged her. "Emmi..." "Yes, Master, you seem troubled..."
She didn't have long to wonder what was on his mind as he quickly explained. "I think... The council thinks there is something wrong with me." Emmi was taken a back a little. She wondered where he had gotten the idea. More, she was concerned that he had the same concerns that she had had. When the Council had placed her with a civilian doctor, she had gotten the sense that something was amiss. There were other highly qualified healers for the job but their motives seemed to be different than what they had said. Had he heard something she hadn't? Still, she felt the need to encoruage him. There was no need for her to confirm his fears. Still, she wasn't good at lying either. Emmi turned her face away from as she spoke, in hopes that he wouldn't see the uncertainty etched into her face. "Wh-what? No! Why would you think that?" she swallowed hard and looked down at her feet. "You're a wonderful researcher, a great Jedi. You must have misunderstood them..."

His blue eyes were fixed on the young woman. Whether he noticed the uncertainty or not, Daniel was sure Emmi would know what he was talking about. She was a brilliant one and not with her healing skills. She was quick to observe and calculate possibilities in her mind. It was one of the reasons Daniel chose her as his new padawan. He knew they had a few good and valuable things in common.
His arms still remained hanging by his sides. His posture or position did not change. But the muscles in his neck were strained, as he was clenching his jaw tightly. "There is nothing to misunderstand." Daniel said with a sigh and shook his head. "Can't you see?" He asked without really expecting for an answer. But then he paused, once again so deep in thoughts. he even closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, Daniel was looking directly to Emmi's eyes. His expression seemed a bit calmer than before.
"Then explain me why they are taking you away from me." He demanded. No, he wasn't going to take small excuses about Emmi learning from another better. She was his padawan. It was his duty to teach her. This was everything against the Jedi codes.

Her words did not help him. He still looked utterly defeated. Emmi rested a hand on his shoulder in hopes that the contact would relax him, however once he began to speak it became clear that was not the case. "There is nothing to misunderstand.. Can't you see?" Emmi didn't answer. She didn't even know how to because she had the same suspicions that he did. Only she hadn't taken them so hard. In her mind the council had done what they had out of a place of caring not anger. Though, standing where Daniel did she could see why he might be upset. He had had a padawan before her just as she had had a master before him. She knew that the woman had died and it had affected Daniel. He must have thought that the council believed him to be a failed master. That was far from the truth. Emmi loved Daniel and she had learned a great deal from him.
A short silence hung between them and in it Emmi could feel that her master was calmer. She was calmer as well. Slowly she pulled her hand away but still kept her soft, concerned eyes on him. "Then explain me why they are taking you away from me." Emmi opened her mouth to speak but then closed it. Again she was at a loss. What was there to say about the matter? The decision had been made and it was clear that the council wouldn't change their minds and nothing that Emmi could say would make him feel better about it. "I'm sorry, Master," she said quietly. "I know this must be hard but I don't think they meant it like that. I am still your padawan and I always will be. Nothing can take that from you but if I am to face the trials in a few years I need to get out of the temple."

When Emmi pulled her hand away from him, Daniel glanced at that gesture. But he said nothing about it. He wasn't the most touchy person, yet the physical contact never bothered him. And he almost looked disappointed for a half second there to lose the touch. But his expression went from defeated to unreadable in short moments. He was thinking, indeed. Of what, that was something only Daniel would know at this point. But Emmi probably had a good guess about it now.
Her explanation for his question was almost naive. She was looking at things from the positive side. But Daniel saw many sides to it and none was putting him in a good place. His lips were parted and he gave out a small sigh, head hanging and eyes closed. he believed Emmi's place was at his side. Not behind or forward or just completely away. And that brought a question. One of the many in his head.
"Do you really believe that... you should work away from me?" He asked softly, eyes still closed. His posture was more relaxed with shoulders dropped. But he actually wasn't in soul.

Her master appeared more relax with his body language but Emmi sensed that this wasn't entirely true. She remained ready to double down on her explanation of what was going on. The last thing she wanted was for her master to endure this sort of hardship. He had lost his last padawan to battle and she knew full well it would pain him if he believed that he had lost her two. The two were close even for the short time they had been together. However, she wasn't entirely prepared for his question. It struck her like a jab to the chest. The look in her eyes caused her physical pain. Suddenly she felt horrible for what she had said. Of course that wasn't what she wanted. What she wanted was to be at his side and to ease his worries. It was hard to do both.
Emmi shook her head quickly. "No, no of course not!" she stopped and backtracked a little. "I mean, I think you misunderstood me. I don't want to work away from you. My place is with you but I just mean to say that getting this experience with Dr. Halos could be a learning experince for me." Even to her ears this wasn't entirely satisfactory. Maybe they needed some kind of distraction. "Perhaps I can speak to the council and Dr. Halos and see if I could spend less time there and more with you on missions and in research. That's a reasonable request, I think. In the mean time why don't you show me some of what you've been working on?"

Emmi's words were not good enough to sooth this bad feeling in his gut. There was something really wrong here and they were both aware of it. But Daniel didn't want his apprentice to get involved in this mess. He had to do this alone.
Shaking his head, he released a sigh. He was certainly doing a good job with keeping his temper in control. But he never snapped about anything before. He never faced a situation like this. So it was actually a brand new experience for him. It was fascinating by his angle of view. Yet it still felt terrible. Perhaps, this was why Daniel didn't enjoy humanly interaction with anyone. It tended to lead up to discomfort in many levels.
"No. I don't want you to speak up for me." He sighed and crossed his arms over his chest. His long sleeves didn't allow his hands to be seen, so it was as good as wearing a straight jacket. "I'll try to sort this out by myself. Don't be concerned for me, Emmi." He said, even calmer than before now. Then he was walking away from his apprentice and toward the garden to get some fresh air. He needed some time to think about everything.
