The last thing Anakin knew, he had been investigating the area that he had last known Obi-Wan to be heading to, his former master believing that there was an anomaly there that potentially could have been a separatist weapon. Anakin of course had been busy de-briefing his squadron on the aerial battle and arranging the clean-up, his Master having been happy to go out alone knowing he could radio Anakin if anything came up he couldn’t handle. At first, as always tended to happen when Obi-Wan was sent somewhere without him, Anakin had tried to offer to go with him but after several more reassurances and a sharp reminder that he was a General now and responsible for a lot more than his former Master’s safety, he had reluctantly let him go. The worried edge, the slight tremor in the force he felt that warned him it was a bad idea didn’t exactly leave, but as he got caught back up again in the preparations for moving to their next mission he stopped noticing how much time had passed since Obi-Wan had left in his Starfighter.
It wasn’t until Cody had come to him later and asked if he had seen General Kenobi that Anakin finally noticed and snapped into action. Leaving instructions with Rex for his clones and informing Admiral Yularen that he would meet them at the rendezvous – not stopping to listen to the man’s protestations – Anakin soon made his way to his own, heavily modified and bright coloured Starfighter where his trusty astromech R2-D2 was already waiting for him. Within moments, his fighter was speeding out the hanger of the destroyer and into space, towards the co-ordinates that Obi-Wan had said he was heading towards. The closer he got, the stronger the feeling was of something being wrong…something being out of place…especially when he arrived and there was no sign of his Master anywhere.
He clenched his jaw as Artoo whistled lowly beside him, reflecting the worry that Anakin was feeling, as he scanned the area and could pick up neither his signal nor even his force signature. The end of their bond was just…blank….almost like it was a ghost at the other end. There was no sign of a battle, the black empty void of space just staring back at him, no debris and no other sign of other people out there. Just….nothing. He swallowed, his mind reeling through all the possibilities but nothing seemed to come to mind as to what could have happened, thinking or trying to make himself believe that maybe he had noted the co-ordinates wrong. There was nothing out here for Obi-Wan to inspect, which had been his intention – it had to be that the thing was somewhere else. So, instead of trying to track Obi-Wan’s signal, he directed Artoo to try and locate any unknown or irregular readings in the surrounding areas. Of course, his work and tinkering on the astromech gave him a greater field of coverage and it wasn’t long before Artoo had another set of co-ordinates to try that seemed to match what Anakin had asked for. Some kind of unusual readings set not too far away from their location.
Anakin wasted no time in screeching through space to get there, feeling like he was heading in the right direction as the force pressed more and more on his senses, practically screaming at him that something was wrong in the direction they were heading. Of course, it put Anakin on edge, but it didn’t deter him from continuing. It wasn’t long before they reached the co-ordinates, and Anakin slowed as the anomaly came into his view screen, leaning forwards a little and squinting his eyes slightly as if it would help him see it better. He glanced down to the read-out screen as Artoo whistled something to him though he hardly needed the translation he offered, he could practically understand the droid as well as any human anyway.
“Your right, this is dangerous but no I’m not turning back. We need to find out what this is, and what’s happened to Obi-Wan. Let’s get a closer look, that thing hasn’t shot at us yet or contacted us so for now we’re still on a fairly neutral ground.” He replied, much to Artoo’s dismay. Anakin shook his head as he heard it, perhaps Obi-Wan had been a little right about giving the droid so much personality.
Slowly he edged his Starfighter closer….the last thing he remembered being Artoo’s shrill and alarmed whistle, feeling the force overwhelm him like it was trying to physically hold him, mentally disable him and take control. Slamming his eyes shut, Artoo having control of the fighter, Anakin had to fight to keep himself conscious and try to dull his connection to the force. He felt like every cell in his body was screaming with urgency, feeling a flash of inexplicable rage as he managed to wrestle back some sort of order….and then just…calm. Tentatively, Anakin squinted his eyes back open, his head throbbing and feeling rather sick to his stomach as a couple of beads of sweat trickled down his temples.
“I’m alright, keep it down. Are you okay?” Anakin replied to the worried astromech at his side, glancing out the cockpit window to see the blue and white droid looking back at him no visible damage having been sustained. “What the hell…was that?”
Taking a few deep breaths to try and settle his stomach, he leant his head back and glanced out at the view in front of him, though he didn’t try and figure anything out just then. Instead he carefully reached out to the force again, frowning slightly as it felt different….so unlike anything he had experienced with it before. The light was so much more prominent now…it didn’t feel like the dark was overwhelming or obscuring his senses. It was like there was an uneasy balance between the two, every so often each side pushing for his attention…letting him choose rather than dominate his feelings. It didn’t feel like such a huge pressure was pushing down on him…it felt strange, but…oddly calming. It helped a little, as he reached into the light side more, to ease his headache some and recover his sense of equilibrium a little. It was then; he started to notice the other differences in front of him.
This wasn’t the part of space he was in moments ago, he knew that straight away with his focus more intact. For one thing, it had a completely different pattern of stars, but for the other…there was a planet in the distance where the anomaly he had been facing should have been. He took a longer, deeper breath and let it out with a small shake of his head, lifting his head off the seat of the cockpit again and sitting more upright. Checking the readouts, his confusion only grew as Artoo his data confirmed the planet to be Dantooine…but it was neither the Dantooine he recognised or the part of the galaxy he had been in before…in fact it was in completely the opposite direction to where he had been heading before the disturbance. Trying to think about what was going on only seemed to worsen his headache and make his stomach twist a little more, shaking his head and glancing back to Artoo as that was the only thing he knew for certain was the same at the moment.
“Artoo are you getting anything about this place? How we got here?” he asked, seeing the droid turn his dome from side to side in a negative response and then whistle something at him excitedly. “You found Obi-Wan’s ship?! On Dantooine?”
Anakin looked out the cockpit again at the planet in the distance, sighing heavily as he felt at least a little relief that he had found his Master – even if he didn’t yet know the circumstances. He hadn’t been gone very long, there was little chance if the ship was okay that anything too bad had happened to him yet. The feeling was only confirmed when he reached out in the force along their bond, and that familiar presence was once more in its rightful place. Giving a small nod, he took control of the fighter again, heading towards the planet and asking Artoo to find him a place to land that was out of the way of where Obi-Wan’s was – as much fun as dropping inside an unsuspecting hanger was at times, Anakin knew this was something very different to anything he had experienced before and he didn’t want to do anything that would cause more trouble for Obi-Wan than he was potentially already in.
Entering the planet’s atmosphere, Anakin touched down his ship in the area that Artoo had set the co-ordinates for and was soon popping the cockpit roof open, climbing out on slightly shaky legs and having to take a few deep breaths of fresh air to be able to steady himself. He raised a hand to the lightsabre on his belt, and watched as Artoo popped himself from Azure Angel’s droid socket to join him. There was no way he was leaving the droid behind, when for the moment it was the only thing he was certain about. His ship could be rebuilt if needs be…Artoo couldn’t be replaced, a face he had argued with Obi-Wan and others about many times…and not just because he had been Padme’s present to him on being made a Jedi Knight either. Feeling a little sturdier on his feet, Anakin set off across the land, feeling the presence of quite a few force users in the direction he headed, and deciding to see if he could find anyone to help him there rather than try and kill him first.
