Since taking Daniel Dumah as her Jedi Master, Emmi had learned a few things. Her first master had been energetic, wise, and a healer but Master Dumah was quite different. He was more reserved, analytical, and intelligent. The interests of both Emmi and Daniel were similar. Emmi was a healer and Daniel studied biology. Under his tutelage, Emmi had learned more about the science of biology and biochemistry but the most important thing she had learned from him was not scientific at all. Master Zyrek had fostered kindness and compassion while Master Dumah allowed Emmi to learn to do things on her own. It had only been in the past four years that the young woman had gained any sort of confidence in her own abilities. For that she was grateful.
However, Daniel had the nasty habit of locking himself away in his room or the library for days as he poured over manuscripts and data. It had been two days since Emmi had seen her Master, which meant that she probably had to pull him away from whatever research project he had sucked himself into. Yes, Daniel was the Master-- the teacher-- in this relationship but often Emmi fell into the position of caretaker for her Master. The kindness the Zyrek had grown in Emmi would not die easily.
On the afternoon of the second day of not seeing him Emmi made her way to the library. The man needed a break and to spend some time with his student. Soon Emmi would be sent to Alderaan to gather some much needed plants for medicine. If she didn't pull him up for air before leaving he might not come up until the project was completed. Strangely, the introverted young woman found herself playing the role that her former master used to often play. Today she intended to drag her master away from the books and out to eat with her. She found him in his usual place, at a long durasteel table in a secluded corner. Quietly, she slipped into the seat across from him, dodging piles of data sheets and books as she did so. "Good afternoon, Master," she said in her usual sweet voice. She paused a moment to give him time to finish his thought before continuing. "I'll be leaving for Alderaan soon and I was hoping that perhaps you might join me for lunch?" Usually Emmi was not so forward with an invitation, in fact this was about all the forwardness she could muster.

Piles and more piles of books, files and sheets were covering the table like a fortress made of paper. While the man who was going through all of it was a very organised person, the table was a mess. At first glance, it could seem as nothing was in order, but there was actually an order only Daniel Dumah could understand. It was complex and had many layers of locks and passwords, which again made sense only for Daniel. He was completely and utterly focused on his reading, but his attention was shifting in between the large old tome he was holding and multiple holographic screens of Jedi archives. It wasn't an easy task to be a Jedi Consular, but he wasn't exactly doing this to polish his title. The need of reading and searching and gathering further knowledge came somewhere deep inside him. This was a natural process for him.
The library wasn't empty, but everyone was away for him; since he was too concentrated on his research. The general silence was heavy in the large area, but that didn't stop Daniel from mumbling to himself in a deep tone. "The concentration of plasmatic glutamate was..." Turning his blue eyes from the holographic screen to another, he read the results with a thoughtful look in his face. His eyebrows were arched and there was certainly a rather heated -but polite none the less- debate going on in his head. Shaking his head at whatever thought that was dominant at the moment, he flicked his gaze toward the third holographic screen. "And the concentration of glycine in plasma was..." It was almost a deep whisper now. Then he was going in between files and a large book. "Levels of glutamate and glycine in plasma and CSF were significantly higher in patients with a higher degree of neurological deficit."
He absolutely showed no reaction, when Emmi approached closer. One could think he never noticed. Perhaps, he didn't. But maybe he did. It wasn't until Emmi spoke, he finally looked away from all his books and readings. Blue eyes were turned up at the young woman with red hair, widening with deep observation. His expression was serious, but certainly showing the fact he needed a moment to catch up with everything else. Especially time and space. Studying for longer periods with no breaks had that effect.
"Oh, Emmi." He finally blinked, but still wearing that slightly confused expression in his face. His eyes looked sleepless and the slight amount of facial hair growing showed he actually forgot to shave in these recent days. Then the reminder of Emmi leaving soon brought more confusion to his face. And eventually the mention of lunch...
Daniel gave a sigh and bowed his head a little to bring a hand to his face, rubbing his eyes. "What time is it?" He asked with a hint of tiredness in his deep tone. Though, the question of the date would be more fitting for his situation. Because he was surely living in the wrong day.
Shaking his head, the elder one finally came to his senses altogether. He wasn't the one for giving breaks much, but the reminder of food made him realise he was hungry. He had been hungry since a long while, but he just realised it. Finally giving a nod, he waved a hand at the holographic screens in order to bookmark where he was and shutting them off. "Food is a good idea." He finally said, agreeing and pushed himself off the table. He was the master here. Older, more experienced and the higher rank. But here Emmi was reminding him one of the most basic activities of life, because he was too distracted to remember.
It took a while for him to find where he discarded his robes. Sometimes layers of cloths just got in the way and he needed space. Putting them on, he took a final glance at the table he had been occupying for last two days. The temptation of bringing a book with him was heavy, but he supposed he could rest his eyes a little.

Emmi was pleased when he did not fight her on the suggestion of lunch. It was surprising as it usually took some prodding to get him to leave his research behind. She had even come prepared to make the usual speech about how feeding the body was important to keeping the mind sharp. However, it would seem that this would not be needed this time around. Smiling, she popped out of her chair. As she did so she knocked a few of the documents around and had to put them back where she had found them. The young woman was nearly bouncing with excitement. "I'm glad that you agree, Master," she told him with a wide smile. "I was hoping to get you out of the library for a little while. Thought you might fight me on it again."
Emmi came around the table and averted her gaze as her Master began to slip his outer robes back on. When she had first become his student the practice had made her very uncomfortable. But after years of dealing with her Master's strange tactics it hardly phased her. She waited patiently for him to get ready. "I trust your time here was productive? Care to tell me what you've been working on or is it secret?" Emmi shot him a teasing smile. She was comfortable with him and let her more playful side out around him. It seemed to be helpful in dragging her Master into normal social situations. Sometimes he didn't know how to deal with people normally and she had to compensate for the both of their social awkwardness.
Once he was ready to go Emmi walked beside him away from the table and out of the library. By now the mess hall of the temple would be less crowded. The lunch time peek had passed but most of the food should still be there. As they reached the hall she glanced over at him. "Did I tell you that the Healers are sending me to Alderaan on a mission?" she asked casually. "I'll be going alone. It's nothing exciting-- I'm just getting some plants for medicine but still. I shouldn't be gone long, though..." Emmi trailed off as she thought about going solo on a mission, even if it was a simple one.

It was true he would be fighting and get into logical debates of how he needed to stay here and continue studying instead of eating. But since he hadn't eaten in two days and he was much feeling it, there was no reason to get into such an argument. Perhaps, Jedi Order wasn't full of normal people; but Daniel always proved to be one of the weirdest ones. That was for a human anyway. He could use a more normal life. Emmi being his padawan helped in that area, though. At least Daniel got used to eat in public instead of leaving crumbs all over his books lately. There was progress.
"I must have lost track of time." He said in a sigh and caught the big smile Emmi was offering him. She was a kind one, as he noticed from the first time they met. Her kindness only grew with their time together. Daniel admitted he wasn't the most chatty person around, but their master and student relationship was quite what he expected; unlike what he experienced with his first padawan. They didn't need a lot of words to get along and communicate. Of course, they still used words. But silence in between them was never the uncomfortable one. At least, on his side.
They left his messy table behind after Emmi managed to knock off one large book pile and put them back in place. Daniel helped with a few books without looking any displeased. He practically memorised most of these books since yesterday. No one would be touching the table, so he didn't seem worried about leaving his study. Most of the Jedi respected each other in that aspect. And even more of them didn't want to interrupt with the weird.
As they walked together, side by side, his student was asking him of what he was working on. There was even a hint of teasing, which went over his head. His answer was truthful. "It's not a secret." He started and continued, believing the topic was quite fascinating. "Neurological chemical compound changes, while using the Force. It's interesting how brain works, once the body and soul is connected to such power." Daniel explained, hoping Emmi would share his delight in this topic. "With the right chemicals, I believe this connection can be strengthened. But the main issue is to do it without giving permanent damage to the body." Daniel was not quite hyped up with what he was talking about, not even checking if Emmi was interested or completely lost on what he was blabbering about. He was showing hints of excitement in his deep tone. "I'm relying on alpha aminoacids, yet there is not a way to do it without frying the brain in expected dose." Now Daniel was wearing that thoughtful expression again, as he was drifting into deep thoughts. "Perhaps, if the peptide is enhanced..." He muttered before drifting into silence.
Thankfully, his padawan was able to bring him back to reality with mentioning about her one-man mission. Daniel gave a nod, but his face was openly showing a hint of concern. He didn't even try to hide it. "I don't like the idea of you going to Alderaan alone." His blue eyes were on Emmi carefully. While the mission to collect herbs was an easy looking one at first place, Daniel was still wary. His previous padawan was ambushed in an easy mission, by a group who wanted to spill Jedi blood. They were not just peace keepers, but also open targets for certain groups.
Daniel might look like he didn't care much for other people. But he cared for Emmi. He was getting attached to the young woman, even if he didn't show it openly. And he certainly couldn't afford to lose her. Perhaps, he needed to show more faith in Emmi being capable of protecting herself. Yet it couldn't be helped in the end.
As they passed by others to reach the mostly finished food, Daniel wasn't done wording his concern. "I want you to be prepared for any surprises."

Emmi allowed for her master to talk about his project. He showed as much enthusiasm as a man of his seriousness would allow. She understood some of it since as a healer she needed to understand biology. However, she had not ever studied the relationship between biology and becoming stronger in the Force. Still, she listened to him, nodding at the parts she did understand. Emmi liked to see him excited about something, even if it was his research. Often he came off as dull and awkward but Emmi saw the potential he had if he was talking about the right topic. "It sounds interesting. Wish I could be more helpful with it," Emmi was unfortunately highly unhelpful apart from bringing him specific books or supplies.
Despite herself, Emmi was a little taken aback by her master's response to her news. She had been rather proud of herself. Being sent out alone meant that the Order and the other healers trusted her. The young red head had spent many years doubting herself and her abilities and to have them validated felt good. Still, she understood why he was worried. His other padawan had been killed on a solo mission as well. His concern was sweet and warranted given his history. Gently Emmi touched his elbow. "No need to worry about me," she assured him. "I will be careful, I always am. You and Master Zyrek have trained me well. I can do this and I will be careful and I will come back to you in one piece. I promise." The two of them had reached the dining hall and Emmi slipped into the half filled room ahead of him. The smell of all the different kinds of food mixed into the air. The hunger pains Emmi had been feeling intensified. Her stomach grumbled loudly which caused her to blush. "What will you be getting today, Master?" She looked up at her teacher with those big green eyes.
(ugg, sorry it is so short!)

Daniel didn't seem to mind the way Emmi couldn't help him in an academic level. He wasn't exactly a good team player in anything. But being master and apprentice didn't always mean they had to focus on the same thing in the same time. She had been supporting him and he was teaching her. Together there was progress in his research, while he would be much slower with everything; if he was to work alone. Then there was the whole chance of him living a less humanly life with all the vital things forgotten.
"You are helpful." He said reflexively, not really aiming to comfort Emmi. He was only telling the truth. Comforting others was never his strong suit. Just like how he failed with social skills for the most part, Daniel didn't think deeply in his words of concern. He was a calculated man who could thing ahead of things. Yet sadly, social interaction wasn't in the limits of this ability. He didn't see how it could sound as he was simply distrusting Emmi in a solo mission. He had no idea it could be hurting. For him, he was only expressing his worry about something he experienced before. The bitter taste of losing his previous padawan was still there, even when he didn't speak about it.
When Emmi touched his elbow only slightly, Daniel looked at the redhead and gave a nod at her promise. He didn't need to remind her to call him, if she was in any trouble. He might not just teleport at her side, but at least he could try helping in any way. "I believe in you." He said with a deep tone, then looking ahead at the dining hall.
As Emmi leaded the way toward the food they could choose from and then asked him what he would like to get, Daniel wasn't really sure. His hunger was there, but he didn't have a favourite. But of course, he had his personal view on the nutrition values of each plate. "This..." He reached for a plate of some green vegetables, then some complex looking sliced meat plate. He certainly wasn't picking for the sake of the good taste. "And this." And then he was turning at Emmi, being all serious. "I recommend you to have the same. High protein and vitamin C. You need it." He was being logical here. Emmi needed to build up all the strength before her solo mission.
