The Jedi and Sith Ranks can be confusing, especially in concern to the powers and abilities one would have, hopefully this thread will clear these things up.
JEDI ORDER:
The Jedi Order is made up of Men and Women from across the Galaxy, ranging from infancy to adulthood and even some from beyond the Neither world of the Force.
Jedi Initiate:
The youngest of the order, or anyone to be taken in from the outside, a Jedi initiate would learn the basics of life before anything else. Infants of this rank receive academic training such as would be received by any normal child.
{At this rank one would only be just aware of their force sensitivity, and therefor will know very little about it and their potential}
Jedi Youngling:
Beyond the age of 2 or 3 a young Jedi to be would be assigned to a Youngling Clan relating to a trait that each of them possesses. Until the age of 12, a Youngling would be trained by a Clan instructor in the art of the force and a lightsaber. They learned only the basics at this time, and were taught the paths that they would later be able to chose from in the future.
{Most younglings would display some Mastery over the force and it's manipulation, but nothing further. No lightsabers would be allowed at this time outside of training sabers.}
The Corps/Works:
If a Youngling is not accepted as a Padawan by the age of 13 at the latest, They are sent to another area of the order where their talents might be needed. Fret not though, as even if you have been sent to one of the Corp or Work's sections, you can still be accepted by another master as was the case with Obi-Wan Kenobi.
{Your formal Jedi Training will have stalled, and though you may be an adult or growing into one, you're skill is not very much more advanced then that of a Youngling or an Early staged Padawan.}
Jedi Padawan:
Once you have been accepted by a Knight or Master for Jedi Training, you gain the rank of Padawan and are taught by that lone master the ways of the Jedi. It is at this rank also that you begin to choose the path that you will follow, and when you will be allowed to construct your lightsaber.
{Padawans begin to have enough skill and potential that they are competent with the force, manipulating it with more precision at this time. They are no longer simple learners, but a force to be reckoned with.}
Jedi Knight:
Once you have passed the Jedi Trials as a Padawan you become a Knight of the Jedi Order, most Padawan's achieve this in their early 20s. Knights are the backbone of the order, and it is at this rank you will take on your first Padawan Learner. At reaching the rank of Knight, you are presented with the choice as to which Path you will follow, they are as follows:
Jedi Consular: A Jedi who devotes himself to the will of the force, focusing his studies on the academic side of the force more then combat or any other skill. Some examples of a Consular are the Shadows of the order, those who become Sages, or Negotiators.
Jedi Guardian: Perhaps the most common path of the order, Guardians were the ones called on during times of war, becoming Generals. They were the ones that focused more on Battle, combat and the martial arts of the Jedi. Aces (pilots), Battle masters, were some of the classes that fell into this category.
Jedi Sentinels: They focused on any of the many abstract sections in the order, filling out the ranks with things that the other Jedi path's did not cover, such as those that became healers, Investigators and so on.
{Jedi Knights are reaching their full potential by this time, and as such have a strength, power, and a connection to the force that many outside the Order find hard to believe.}
Jedi Master:
Once you have trained a Padawan to Knighthood (by this time you are likely in your 30s), you have reached the rank of Master, but you are far from your peek, as you still have much to learn and improve upon. By this time you would have some force powers and lightsaber styles mastered depending on the path you had taken as a Knight.
{Jedi who have reached their prime, and whose skill is hard to match in the order or outside.}
The Council:
The Council is made up of Jedi assigned to different areas of the order, tasked with helping the order to blossom and to develop the areas as needed for the changing times. The members are all extremely skilled in their own areas, and act as a sort of role model for those in the order...
{It would be unlikely that many people would be able to over come a council member alone in combat or in many other areas.}
